The Challenge: Moving Controlling onto a New Data Warehouse, Without Losing a Step

The client was migrating its data sourcing to a new Data Warehouse and adopting a new data model organization-wide. For the Controlling department, that shift carried real risk: their reporting and processes run on precise, trusted numbers, and any gap in sourcing or logic during the cutover could break workflows the team relied on every day. The mandate was clear — move the Controlling Datamart onto the new foundation while keeping the business logic controlling depends on fully intact.

The Discovery: An Embedded Partner on the Data Team

IDS Consulting was already working alongside the client’s Data Warehouse team, providing data integration and technical support on the dedicated Datamart serving Controlling. When the migration to the new DWH began, IDS took on the task of carrying that Datamart — and the business logic behind it — onto the new platform.

The Solution: Rebuilding the Interface, Preserving the Logic

IDS built the interface between the source systems and the new Data Warehouse, and adapted every existing functionality to the new data model — so the business logic behind Controlling’s reports and processes carried over intact rather than being rebuilt from scratch.

Alongside the migration itself, IDS introduced a CI/CD concept for the Oracle project, using Git, Bitbucket, and Jenkins to standardize how code is delivered and reduce the risk of errors at deployment. GitHub Copilot, paired with multiple AI models, helped accelerate development throughout.

The Battle: Bringing CI/CD to an Oracle World

The single hardest part of this project was introducing CI/CD into an Oracle/PL/SQL context — an environment not natively built for the automated pipelines that modern software delivery takes for granted. IDS designed a Git- and Jenkins-based workflow around Oracle’s constraints, giving the project a standardized, repeatable delivery process where none existed before.

The Results: Continuity First, a Stronger Foundation for What’s Next

  • Zero disruption to Controlling.  The core objective — keeping controlling processes and reporting running without interruption through the migration — was met in full, with 100% of existing reports and processes carried over onto the new data model.
  • Deployment errors cut by an estimated 40%.  Standardizing releases through the new CI/CD pipeline removed much of the manual handling that used to cause deployment mistakes in the Oracle environment.
  • Release preparation down from roughly 2 days to under half a day.  Automating the build-and-deploy steps that were previously done by hand freed up significant developer time per release.
  • Cleaner code as a byproduct.  The migration included a partial refactor of the existing codebase.
  • A repeatable delivery process for Oracle.  The new CI/CD pipeline standardizes how changes reach production and lowers the risk of deployment errors going forward.
  • Lean, embedded delivery.  A single IDS consultant carried the project from migration through to its current enhancement-and-maintenance phase.
